In-Game: Joe Cool to the Rescue?

The Nationals send Joe Ross to the hill for his 12th start against Cardinal’s Left-handed prospect Marco Gonzalez. The originally scheduled pitcher was Carlos Martinez. But, he was scratched with a sore neck.

Ross and his 3.24 ERA compares favorably to Martinez who had 10 MLB appearances last year, pitching to a 4.15 ERA. Neither of the teams has a single player that has faced the opposing pitcher. Look for the second time through the lineup to be all-important tonight. The San Francisco Giants were completely throttled during Ross’ first time through. The second time turned the experience into a “Tale of Two Cities.” That knife will cut both ways tonight.

Speaking of Ross, Matt Williams is hinting that he might not be shut down on an innings limit after all. “It’s an interesting scenario because he hasn’t been hurt. It’s not like he has had an injury and we are cautious in that regard,” Williams said. “It’s uncharted territory because he hasn’t [pitched a lot of innings]. But looking how he has gone about it, all indications are that he is fine.” The determining factor may well be whether the Nats are still relevant in the Division race later in the month.

What did he mean Joe couldn’t grip the ball? Nerve damage or what.

Phan the 0-2 to a walk was a killer. He was wrong none of the 4 balls were close to a strike. Right handed dribblings.

I agree, but shouldn’t you get somebody warming up pretty quickly when a pitcher is starting to lose it in the 3rd inning of a game in early September and you are trailing the Mets by 6.5 games and your offense just put up four runs and knocked out the other starter. It is on the players, but by not getting someone up and stretching when he was missing the strike zone by a foot leaves at least a little blame on MW.

      Like

      • manassasnatsfan says:

He got him up fast . I am not sure how you would have a bull pen left if you got a reliever up after 2 men reach base every time. Once the third one on he was up.

        That to me is reasonable.

        Like

        • needanatsfix says:

Normally I would agree with you, let your starters work out of jams and don’t overuse your bullpen. But I propose this is different for three reasons.

First, Ross had already put three men on (one had scored) before Fister got up to start stretching. Normally, not a big issue. But he was not just nibbling corners and walking guys, he was missing the strike zone by a wide margin. He also had thrown a first pitch ball to eight consecutive batters before Wong fouled off the first pitch.

Second, Joe Cool has had amazing control all year. He did not walk anyone. By the time he had walked three guys I started to realize that something was really not right with him tonight. Gio gets wild and gets out of it, stressful but expected. Ross has never been wild this year, he has had great command in nearly every start.

Finally, the season is not a long one anymore so wins do matter. A 4-0 lead in the house of horrors is something that should be protected. Knowing that Solis is called up and a number of other guys can arrive tomorrow to help in the bullpen should mean that every weapon needs to be used to keep getting W’s.

Again, I have been annoyed by the fire MW comments all year, but I have finally reached my breaking point. I’m not trying to pile on the guy, I just think this decision was more complicated than just a couple base runners.

All the comments chastising MW are bizarre. I believe he got Fister up right after the second walk. It’s not like a former starter can warm up and come in the game in a matter of minutes. McCatty went out, Ramos went out. Both buying time.

MW has screwed up lots of times this year, but this wasn’t one of them.

I’m sure it looks great. I’m just telling you that as a commenter who sometimes gets home at 9 pm, and wants to catch up on a game thread before participating, it’s a nightmare. You said I’d get used to it, but I tried and I’m not. You have to scroll up from the bottom to read comments and try to figure which are Tier 1 comments, then scroll back down to read replies. It doesn’t work for me and I’m less likely to participate if it stays that way.

I’m still trying to figure out why anyone thinks it’s better except if they are too lazy to scroll down to the bottom to comment. That seems like a weak reason to change the way we’ve all been used to reading and commenting since NI started.

IT would another thing if, like Wash Post NJ, you could choose whether to read the newest comments first or oldest comments first. But someone said early on that’s not an option because it costs too much.

          Just my two cents.

          • Just my own two cents, but if I come in at the fifth inning and choose to read 100 comments (or whatever), I find it takes me about the same amount of time, no matter where I start. And if I’m on a keyboard, navigating top to bottom, or vice versa, is one or two keystrokes, depending on what OS I’m on at the time. So for me, I don’t really care either way. It just takes getting used to, because my brain is now trained to Oldest First.

I’m impressed Sofa that you can reverse course so easily. Because if you’re navigating bottom to top, you have to go up and down in order to read the replies. But if you go top to bottom (oldest to newest) you’re always traveling in the same direction.

Luckily, the programming geniuses have figured out how to give us a choice, which means you and I won’t have to argue about this anymore. 🙂

I’d ask you why having to scroll through the same two or three hundred old comments every time you refresh is somehow better, but it doesn’t matter because disqus, for all its faults, gives you the option so everyone can suit his or her self. Also, realtime notification of new posts when it’s working properly, as it sometimes does.

As for “scrolling” through 200 comments, just FYI, if you go to the right hand side of the screen there’s a vertical bar right where that arrow for scrolling is. You just click and hold it and drag to the bottom. Usually takes about .042 seconds to drag to the bottom. 🙂
